Practice Areas:

Business & Corporate, Estate Planning, Tax Planning & Controversies

Background:

Mark brings over thirty years of legal experience to his clients at Parsons Farnell & Grein. His main practice areas include federal and state income, employment, and transfer tax planning and controversies.

Mark is an acknowledged expert in advising business, real estate and investment owners and executives in planning for the federal and state consequences of all facets of their ownership, employment or participation in their various ventures. Mark is especially adept in the areas of limited liability company, partnership and corporate tax law, owner and executive compensation, mergers and acquisitions, real estate tax law, like-kind (tax free) exchanges, complex LLC and partnership arrangements, business and investment succession planning, insurance tax law and charitable tax planning and organizations. He also regularly represents clients who are contesting adjustments to their federal or state taxes by the IRS or Oregon Department of Revenue - both through the administrative process and, where necessary, in litigation.

Mark is a former board member and Chair of the Oregon State Bar Association's Tax Section, an officer, board member and the driving force behind the Portland Tax Forum since its formation in 1988, a member of the Planning Committee for the Oregon Tax Institute from 2000-2005, and a member of the Portland Estate Planning Council. He has taught business tax law at Willamette Law School, and has been a member of the Joint Task Force of the Oregon State Bar's Business and Tax Sections responsible for drafting and amending Oregon's Limited Liability Company Act since that Act was first drafted in 1993. He is the author of numerous articles and conference materials covering various aspects of federal taxation and also Oregon and Washington limited liability companies, and is a frequent speaker on these topics both locally and nationally.

Mark’s personal interests revolve around his family and his love for sports. He and his wife, Pat, have two children who somewhat naively expect dad to be able to adeptly explain their homework assignments to them. Mark served for several years as a member of the Holy Trinity Parish School Council, and the Chair of its Finance Committee. Mark is a devoted baseball and Seattle Mariners fan, and he and his son undertake ritual pilgrimages to Safeco Field every summer. He is also a golf hacker of the worst order, and is a clear and present danger to the flora and fauna at Willamette Valley Country Club when time permits.
