Sean’s practice focuses on assisting individual and corporate policyholders manage risk and resolve insurance coverage disputes, including cases arising out of general liability, D&O liability, professional liability, property and auto policies in federal and state courts throughout Oregon and Washington. Sean brings a unique perspective to obtaining efficient and cost effective results for policyholders after having spent nine years representing insurers in jurisdictions throughout the country in professional liability, environmental, construction defect, health care, personal injury and wrongful death coverage disputes.

Representative Engagements

Represented insurer in United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in a contribution action involving novel questions of law on allocation between professional liability insurers under claims made policies. Represented primary insurer in declaratory judgment action and related mediation of underlying wrongful death and personal injury actions arising from the collapse of a multi-ton swing stage from the 30th floor of the John Hancock Center in Chicago.

Represented primary insurer in a multi-party declaratory judgment action to determine coverage obligations with respect to landfill closure and cleanup under Washington's Model Toxics Control Act.


Represented professional liability insurer in multiple cases against insured attorney arising from asbestos litigation malpractice claims throughout the United States.

Represented primary and excess insurers in multiple jurisdictions regarding coverage disputes over an insured's underlying CERCLA or state equivalent liability for environmental response costs.

Defended insurer in action involving the remaining available underinsured motorist benefits following deceased insured's receipt of multiple policy limits settlements from at-fault drivers.

Provided coverage analysis and consultation regarding insurer's alleged exposure arising from the murder/suicide of the City of Tacoma Chief of Police and his wife.
